Project Description:
DRT provides public health, technology, data, communications, and visualization support to enhance the government’s ability to use public health data to address diverse, complex, and emerging problems. This includes designing and developing application and database solutions. In addition, this team develops innovative data capture and analysis techniques to enhance safety research and recommendation efforts across the country.
Job Summary:
The Database Administrator works directly with public health analysts, coordinators, data scientists, and other technologists. The DBA analyses, monitors, and manipulates data for optimal database performance. Accesses public health databases, data structures, and data flows to recommend and perform the import, structuring, and encoding of public health data.
Responsibilities:
- Designs, builds, and maintains multiple databases for use with public health data
- Works with analysts, subject matter experts, and technologists to determine and implement database systems
- Monitors database performance and recommends and implements enhancements
- Conduct a thorough analysis of the current database architecture
- Evaluate scalability, flexibility, security measures, performance optimization potential, and adherence to industry best practices
- Develop an implementation plan for integrating advanced data analytics capabilities
- Outline requirements for data collection, analysis tools or algorithms needed to derive meaningful insights from partner-related data
- Identify strengths and weaknesses within the existing architecture
- Respond to error handling during data ingestion
- Address timely to scalability challenges with increased dataset sizes
- Ensure data quality processes to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data ingested into systems from dynamic and static data sources
- Establish data government and compliance with relevant regulations, privacy policies and security standards
- Develop automated validation scripts or tools to identify and flag data validation errors in Excel sheets with hundreds, thousands, or hundreds of thousands of rows
- Implement error handling mechanisms to capture and report specific validation errors for manual review and correction
- Develops and manages a schedule to meet deliverables and establish estimated completion dates
- Follows the government’s software development lifecycle framework and provides agreed upon project documentation
- Completes tasks on time with minimal supervision but supports collaboration across teams
- Experience with database systems like MySQL or PostgreSQL for efficient data storage and retrieval
- In-depth understanding of relational databases including advanced SQL querying techniques for complex data retrieval, aggregation, filtering, and joins
- Experience in designing normalized database schemas with appropriate indexing strategies to ensure data integrity and optimize query performance
- Proficiency in utilizing database migration tools (e.g., Alembic) for seamless schema updates across different environments
- Must have or be able to obtain a Public Trust with the US federal government
- At least seven years’ experience in database administration roles
- Advanced understanding of relational database design, development, and management
- Familiarity with common API languages
- Knowledge of public health data and related privacy requirements (HIPPA, PII, etc.)
- Recent experience with CDC environment and standards: SDLC, technical architecture, release processes
- Experience with Agile and DevOps methodologies
- Knowledge of EDAV techniques using tools like Data Bricks notebooks for data analysis, visualization, and reporting
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, IT or related field
